Programme Overview

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is a statutory body established by an Act of Parliament (IWAI Act 1986) under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India. IWAI invites applications for its Internship Programme 2025-26 from students pursuing or having completed Graduate/Post-Graduate courses from Universities/Institutions of National and International repute.

Monthly Stipend

Undergraduate: ₹10,000/-
Post Graduate/Research: ₹20,000/-

Stipend payable on satisfactory completion of internship

About IWAI: IWAI was set up in 1986 with a mandate to develop and regulate the inland waterways for shipping and navigation. It is primarily responsible for development, maintenance and regulation of Inland Water Transport (IWT) in India, specifically National Waterways (NWs). In April 2016, the Government of India declared 106 new National Waterways in addition to the existing five National Waterways.

Eligibility Criteria

The following criteria are applicable for candidates applying for this position:

Undergraduate Students

  • Currently pursuing Graduate course
  • Minimum 75% marks in 12th examination
  • From Universities/Institutions of National/International repute
  • Maximum 10 seats available

Post Graduate Students

  • Currently pursuing or completed Post-Graduate course
  • Minimum 60% marks in Graduation
  • From Universities/Institutions of National/International repute
  • Maximum 15 seats available

Research Scholars

  • Currently pursuing Research
  • Minimum 60% marks in Post-Graduation
  • From Universities/Institutions of National/International repute
  • Included in PG category (15 seats total)

Interns may be placed at IWAI Headquarters in Noida or various Regional Offices across India. The region-wise proposed deployment for 2025-26 is as follows:

Note: Actual placement depends on requirement, consent of concerned division, and approval of competent authority. IWAI reserves the right to modify deployment based on organizational needs.

Application Process

  1. Application Format: Use prescribed format (Annexure-A). Applications must include detailed CV.
  2. Submission Address: Send applications to The Secretary, Inland Waterways Authority of India, A-13, Sector-1, Noida-201301.
  3. Area of Interest: Clearly indicate area of interest and preferred division. Applicants should visit IWAI website (iwai.nic.in) to understand various divisions.
  4. Institute Recommendation: On selection, produce letter from Head of Department/Principal indicating status and "No Objection" for internship period.
  5. Deadline: Applications must be received by 31st December 2025. Late applications will not be considered.
  6. Location Preference: Indicate 1st, 2nd, and 3rd preference for internship location.

Important Conditions

  • Internship may be terminated with 1 month notice if performance unsatisfactory

  • Interns attached to Director/Deputy Director level officer
  • Final report/paper submission mandatory

IWAI's Discretion

  • Right to fix selection criteria based on applications
  • Right to limit number of applicants for particular period
  • Discretion to choose most suitable candidates
  • Policy may be modified with competent authority approval
